I create abstract plant forms using acrylic paint on wood panels. My study of modern art has inspired me to experiment with form and color and to embrace flatness and abstraction. Influenced by the Cubists’ use of multiple perspectives as well as their deconstruction and reconstruction of form, I begin my process by making observational line drawings of plants from different viewpoints. Over the organic lines created by the wood grain, I layer multiple line drawings on top of each other, actively breaking down the naturalistic plant forms. I depict layered greenery that appears to grow beyond the edges of the paintings to convey the idea of nature as an expansive and continual force that makes up everything. My palette consists of colors that appear in various stages of nature’s life cycle to represent its ability to endure death and destruction. I intend for the flowing organic forms, which cover the entire surface of the painting, to convey the feeling of nature as all-encompassing.
